Jay Tinklenberg grew up in the plains of South Dakota. He attended Calvin College graduating with a degree in History and Religion. He then attended South Dakota State University and received his masters in School Counseling. He has been coaching basketball for 20 years with stops at Sioux Falls Christian High School and Covenant Christian Academy in Florida. Jay is married to PCA teacher Kathy Tinklenberg. They have three children, Jacob, Jaris, and Janae.
